Activity: Hearts in Nature/ Creating Your Own

Step #1

Go outside and see if you can find naturally formed hearts (either rocks, leaves, anything that seems to jump out at you) and write down the objects that looked like hearts.

Step #2

Create your own heart in nature, an example is below (Please use only what you find outside to create your art piece or materials that will not hurt the environment).

Step #3

In either writing or with a photo share what hearts you have seen out in nature and what you experienced when creating your own heart outside. Share your comments either with a link to your picture or about your experience doing this activity. For more information/prizes click HERE.

Leaves that fall,

 Begin to call,

For something more,

Upon the floor.

A heart you say?

Okay lets play.

Morning Hearts

DSCF0985

The bright greens and yellows of Nature’s hearts give off an intensity of wakefulness. And although¬†my heart art¬†have little color, the lighter tones¬†in the others give me a sense of calm. All in all the morning was filled with dynamism and stillness, the perfect morning blend. ^_^

While peeling an orange the other day I had the sudden insight to create this. Looking around for the right setting to place it I looked to my left and there it was. I know “weeds” are not liked by many, so I sent them a little love.

Fallen Blooms Still Glow

DSCF0583

The long winter has finally allowed spring to come forth and as much as I enjoyed the snow, I am overjoyed to see the flowers in bloom!

This past week I’ve been keeping an eye on my Mother’s Azaleas as they went from buds to flowers and this morning¬†¬†I woke to find an overnight’s frost¬†caused¬†the¬†flowers to drop¬†off the branches.¬†I was¬†saddened by the length of time I had left with them so¬†I decided to create something new with¬†the soft¬†magenta¬†pedals.

In my pajamas and holey crocs,¬†I walked outside through the icy lawn and had to I remind myself of a quote from Andy Goldsworthy, “good art keeps you warm”. The¬† yellow glow of the morning sunrise stretched across the lawn pointing me to my destination,¬† a spot on the hill. The lush grass¬†was a perfect contrast to the¬†dusty pink flowers. And by the time that I was done, Andy Goldsworthy’s quote proved to be true. Here’s hoping for more warm weather!

Behind the Work

DSCF0425-001DSCF0415-001

I posted these two pictures on the new Facebook group for Unfolding the Heart, one of our readers wanted to know more about the process of this piece:

Thank you Dara for your comment and question!

My Emotional Motivation

I laugh when I say this, but my motivation for this was from cabin fever! I have been meaning to do outside work and kept putting it off because of the cold weather. I¬†tend to¬†put off creative projects when I feel out of balance within myself. When I can’t stand being in my head and in the house any longer I throw myself into nature and become calm once again to take on a new day. Creating¬†art in nature reminds me¬†to love myself, take care of my thoughts and reconnect with my surroundings.

Creation of the Image

I have been wanting to make a larger snow heart and because the snow was starting to melt it was now or never. To make a new one bigger and faster than the last I decided to roll a snowball. I Immediately knew it would be a heart, so after the main snowball was made I began to grab snow around it to build the rest of the heart. The snow was great for packing and was easy to smooth over large bumps as I went. I finished the snow sculpture by smoothing out around the base. Later I realized I had created another heart impression on the ground which was a fun surprise to me.

Photography Decisions

When the piece was done, I looked around at what else in the surroundings could make it an interesting picture. For this particular piece I noticed that the snow blended into each other and strong shadows where necessary for the heart to be seen in a picture. I made the sculpture late in the evening so my first picture was lit by a flood light on the side of the house. Again in the morning I noticed strong shadows from the rising sun, this gave depth to the picture and a slight sense of dynamism.

Winter’s Lesson

Inner Reflection

When ever I feel farthest from myself mentally and emotionally, I turn to nature for a cure. I sit with nature and let it cleanse my soul of old thoughts that no longer serve me. For the past year I have been creating snow hearts and nature designs to help me feel more connected with nature. What I have learned the most is that nature reminds me to love myself and my surroundings. To love what is right in front of me and know that I am where I need to be in that moment.

Nature Art

By creating nature art I feel at peace within myself,  it is a form of meditation for me. The process of creation empties my thoughts of past and future. My mind is then free to play in the moment with what I have. Once the process is complete, I am filled with a lively attitude to take on anything.

I am grateful of these past few months. Yes, winter was a frigid one this year, but I was able to find warmth within my heart from the snow.

Feedback:

How do you feel after being out in nature? What brings you to a place of calm? What do you love to create?
